Denmark has a reputation for being liberal, and in many ways it is: casual relationships are not frowned upon, and men and women approach dating on equal terms. What surprises many newcomers is how reserved Danes can be with strangers. Approaching someone cold in a bar is less common than in Southern Europe, which is exactly why apps and sites play such a big role.
English is spoken almost everywhere, and very well. Still, the leading local casual sites are in Danish, and a profile with a word or two of Danish stands out. The good news is that most Danes will reply in English without hesitation once a conversation starts.
Copenhagen has by far the largest and most international dating scene, followed by Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg. Outside the cities, the pool shrinks quickly and people are more likely to know each other, so a discreet profile can be useful.
Etiquette tends to be low-key. Splitting the bill is normal, showing off is not, and the Danish idea of hygge means a relaxed drink somewhere cosy often beats an elaborate plan. Be honest about what you want: vague intentions are seen as more awkward than a clear “I am looking for something casual”.
Sexvenner is our top pick for Denmark. It is a Danish site dedicated to casual partners and friends with benefits, so expectations are clear from the start. The interface is in Danish and it is open to adults from 18.
Match is second, and it is important to say it plainly: Match is a mainstream dating site, not a hookup site. We include it because it has a big pool open to all ages, and many members are open to something casual if you are clear about it upfront. The Danish version is aimed at members over 25.
C-Date takes third place. It is a long-running casual site that suggests matches based on what people say they are open to, with discreet profiles. The Danish site is designed for adults from 25.
NaughtyCharm is fourth. It is a light, flirty platform for no-strings chats with a discreet mode, and in Denmark it runs in English, which makes it an easy start for new arrivals. Members are 20 and over.
You can get a feel for each platform without paying. Sexvenner and NaughtyCharm both include a free sign-up, free browsing and free winks or likes. C-Date offers a free sign-up, free browsing and personality-based suggestions at no cost.
On all three, sending and reading messages requires a paid membership. Match follows the same logic: a free profile, free browsing and free likes, with messaging as the paid part.
One thing to watch: introductory trials on dating sites frequently switch to a full subscription automatically. Check the renewal terms before paying and note the cancellation date in your calendar.
For a no-cost option, the free apps are widely used in Denmark. Tinder offers free swiping and free chat with matches; Bumble has free matching and chat, where women message first in matches between men and women; and Feeld is free to use with paid extras, aimed at open-minded singles and couples.
NaughtyCharm works in English and Tinder is full of internationals in the capital. Tip: mention your neighbourhood, such as Norrebro or Vesterbro, in your bio; it makes suggesting a nearby first drink much easier.
C-Date combines discreet profiles with suggestions based on what you are open to, and Match has a pool open to all ages. Tip: keep identifying details such as your employer out of your profile until you have met in person.
Bumble lets you open every conversation, and Sexvenner makes the casual intention clear from the start. Tip: Danish dating culture is very egalitarian, so feel free to propose the time and place yourself.
Feeld is designed for couples and open-minded singles, and C-Date lets you specify what you are both open to. Tip: use a shared profile photo that clearly shows two people, so there is no confusion about who someone is talking to.
Sexvenner ranks first in our comparison for Denmark, followed by Match for its big pool, then C-Date and NaughtyCharm.
Yes. NaughtyCharm runs in English in Denmark, and Tinder, Bumble and Feeld are widely used in English. Sexvenner, Match and C-Date are in Danish, though most members speak excellent English.
Signing up and browsing is free on every service in our ranking. Messaging needs a paid membership on Sexvenner, C-Date and NaughtyCharm, and is a paid feature on Match. Tinder, Bumble and Feeld have free versions.
Denmark is generally a safe place to date. Still, meet in public, tell someone your plans, never send money and report any profile that seems fake.
Tinder is the default free app for quick dates, with Bumble and Feeld as the main free alternatives.
